About Discovery High School

Through its distinct wall-to-wall early college model, Discovery provides students the opportunity to live out their college, career, and wage potential in the region.

In partnership with Worcester State University, Quinsigamond Community College, Holyoke Community College, and Westfield State University, students can earn at least three-to-six college credits per semester, beginning in their freshman year — and they can choose to defer graduation for a fifth year to complete a fully funded associate degree along with their high school diploma.

DHS maximizes career and wage opportunities through its “pathways” model, in which students specialize their learning in one of several technology-centered areas, including computer science, IT, engineering, and digital media. In its rigorous, engaging, hands-on environment — with industry-grade technology in a dedicated makerspace — Discovery has particular success in supporting emerging bilinguals through the universal languages of coding, tinkering, and designing.

What is the school doing to improve outcomes?

  • Providing all students with dedicated, extended advising blocks that personalize literacy and organizational skill development to be measured by early college credit accrual of 3-9 credits per semester beginning no later than spring of freshman year
  • Providing all students with access to a 30-minute intervention block in conjunction with each core class to either deepen fundamental skills or accelerate skill development through applied learning measured by ongoing competency determination in each core subject
  • Creating a process through which educators are regularly and intentionally aggressively monitoring to ensure students can access the rigor of the content
  • Analyzing the aggressive monitoring to determine what shifts in instruction are necessary
