Launched in 2019, the Lyons Center for Equity in Urban Education’s mission is to help diversify the teacher pipeline in Western Massachusetts to better relate to and reflect the population of the region’s urban schools. In partnership with the public school districts in Springfield, Holyoke and Chicopee, the program identifies a diverse group of individuals who are already working in the system as paraprofessionals – or as teachers working on waivers – to clears the next hurdles, including the Massachusetts Tests Educator Licensure ( MTEL) exam and complete course work.
