SEZP Approach

Mission

SEZP is a groundbreaking partnership between Springfield Public Schools, the Springfield Education Association, and the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education to empower students, families, and educators to ensure every student receives an education that prepares them for success in school, career, and life.

For over ten years, SEZP has produced sustained gains in one of the state’s highest-need communities. What makes this remarkable is how it happened: not through charter conversion, state takeover, or significant new funding, but inside a traditional district—through a negotiated model that combines school-level autonomy, strong principal leadership, and high teacher buy-in.

Today, more than half of SEZP schools have cleared the state’s turnaround bar, representing the strongest most consistent improvement among state interventions.

Approach

What makes SEZP different?

Eight principles — and the people behind them.

Our model is built on innovation. Our strength comes from community. And our results are driven by educators who show up every day with purpose and passion.

Together, these forces shape our eight Success Drivers — the pillars that define how every SEZP school operates, grows, and puts students first.

Hear directly from the people living it. Click any driver below to see SEZP principals, teachers, administrators, and partners describe how it works in their own words.
