The Cynthia A. Lyons Center for Equity in Urban Education (CEUE) at Elms College is hosting a three part Culturally Responsive Teaching and Leading Professional Learning Series. Dr. Tyra Good, Executive Director of the CEUE, will be joined by Dr. Jahkari JT Taylor to facilitate the workshop series. Dr. Taylor is the author of, Becoming Culturally Responsive Educators: 5 Necessary Action Steps, and the founder of Purpose Pushers, LLC.

Workshop Series Overview:

Elms College’s Cynthia A. Lyons Center for Equity and Urban Education (CEUE) and Purpose Pushers LLC are partnering to provide dynamic opportunities for professional learning centered around Culturally Responsive Teaching. This interactive series will help educators employ a culturally responsive approach to meeting the needs of diverse students and families.

Workshop Series Description:

Tuesday, March 19th 4:00-5:30 pm EST (Virtual) Session: “Is this lesson for You or Your Students? – Becoming Culturally Responsive Educators”

This thought-provoking keynote explores the latest research on culturally responsive education. It seeks to increase educators’ awareness of cultural competence, culturally responsive practices, and culturally responsive pedagogy. In this session, teachers will learn the what, the how, and the why of culturally responsive lesson planning. Additionally, educators will receive tips and strategies to create culturally responsive lessons across content areas to meet diverse learners’ unique needs.

Tuesday, March 26th 4:00-5:30 pm EST (Virtual) Session: “Developing Multicultural Consciousness”

This session will equip educational leaders and educators with research-based best practices for meeting the unique needs of culturally and linguistically diverse students. Attendees will review the historical progression of multicultural education and multicultural consciousness as theoretical frameworks. Dr. Taylor will facilitate reflective coaching conversations to help educators identify potential barriers to developing cultural competence. To diversify educators’ knowledge base, attendees will explore contributions from African American, Hispanic, and Asian cultures that have shaped history. In conclusion, attendees will receive (5) practical strategies for developing multicultural consciousness.

Friday, April 5th 3:30-5:00 pm EST (In-Person) VIP Session: “Meet and Greet with the Author at Elms College”

At this VIP session attendees will be able to meet the Learning Series facilitator and author of Becoming Culturally Responsive Educators: 5 Necessary Action Steps, Dr. Jahkari JT Taylor. Attendees will receive a complimentary autographed copy of Dr. Taylor’s book, as well as an Elms College “swag bag”, an opportunity to be photographed with Dr. Taylor, light refreshments and a GOOD time!
